Langkawi’s Heritage. We have just been told that LADA (Langkawi Development Authority) and the Kedah State Government have just applied to UNESCO for ‘Geopark Status'. This is defined as a site or a number of sites, of geological heritage or geological entities of special scientific importance, rarity or beauty, not solely of geological significance but also ecological, archaeological, historical or cultural value. So our unique Mount Matchinchang with its 550 million-year-old rock formations and the fantastic limestone landscape of Dayang Bunting Island, as well as similar formations in the mangrove forest areas of the east side, are being put forward for this unique status This if successful will be the First in South East Asia, out of a world total of only 30. STOP PRESS. We have just received the following from a great friend of these islands:-
" The Mount Matchinchang sandstone range, Daying Bunting limestone, and the limestone hills and mangrove swamps in the east are among the most important landscapes of Malaysia let alone Langkawi. It is great news indeed that they are being considered for GEOPARK status by UNESCO. I wish both LADA, KEDAH and the people of Langkawi every success in their endeavour to put these areas of World importance more firmly on the map of conservation." Prof. David Bellamy OBE
Thank you for keeping me up to date and I hope that I can visit Langkawi again in the not to far distant future. Cheers David
