ISLAND HORSES

Perdana Stables
The only Equestrian Centre on Langkawi

This is a very popular adventure, in that not only do people get to ride a fine horse, but they are able to see and enjoy a wonderful part of this island’s beauty in its jungles and beaches.
For the normal ride, they will be taken through a secondary jungle and across small streams, where so much can be seen in flora, and often a few of the fauna.
Later riding along a fine beach with views across blue seas to the far islands, which adds to the whole experience in a great way.
Those who live here could ‘livery’ their horses in the stables, and ride whenever they like. Also children are given good riding lessons, and will be shown how to take care of horses…

I have known Hamzah, the owner, as a friend since I arrived here, and admire him as a dedicated ‘Horseman’, and a superb rider.
After starting with a few horses stabled at his house, he has progressed rapidly to the fine stables he now has, hugely supported and encouraged by Tun.Dr. Mahathir himself a dedicated horse lover..

Hamzah is not only a horse lover, but also highly qualified in all the trades and skills needed to look after such a big operation.
He has a small local staff, all trained by him.

The PERDANA TRAIL.

There is now a wonderful expansion to these fantastic facilities…
Some time ago Tun Dr Mahatir, who as we all know is devoted to the island of Langkawi and all that occurs here, combined with his own extensive  knowledge, wanted to provide a world famous riding experience here on Langkawi.

So he arranged for expert jungle trackers to blaze him a new trail through the Primary Rain Forest all round the Chinchang mountains, now an integral part of the UNESCO Geo-park, and one of the most important landmarks of the very ancient geology of the whole of South East Asia...

It starts some few minutes from the stables, up steep face of the mountains, continues from the Telaga side round the other  to the Datai bay side, and back.
It is some 70 kms long. In places this trail is extremely steep but always full of fascinating things to see in the jungle and spectacular views to wonder at.
At the moment it is only for the quite experienced and those invited,
Tun Dr Mahathir is a superb rider and he himself has ridden most of the trail, Hamzah has many times and is delighted for an excuse to go again, and again…

There is a shorter version of this, via the Seven Wells, to see part of the Trail with less stress and in a shorter time. Only good riders will be taken but it in itself is a very exciting and interesting expedition..

So we thought that the whole system would soon be needing a fascinating Magazine to let everybody know the story as it unfolds.
One day a book will evolve……and also perhaps a ‘New Legend’ about......
                                                                                                The  Langkawi Horses…

I promised Tun Dr. Mahathir  to be on the cover of this magazine, and hopefully he will continue his great support for Island Horses.

These have now been completed and are magnificent, they stand at the foot of Mount Chinchang, in the jungle, by the side of a delightful river, coming down from Seven Wells..

Some time long into the future, people will ask what is the
‘Legend behind Langkawi Horses’………??.
Well some will say that a world famous Chief Minister who loved Langkawi went on a journey to Arabia, and there.  The King gave him personally a beautiful royal Arab stallion itself of an ancient lineage….
On returning to the island he discussed with a famous horseman he knew, the need for a breed of horses born and brought up there, to be able to gallop freely on the beautiful beaches and climb fabled mountains of old unseen jungle.
This they had  both been doing together for some time with horses from elsewhere, but agreed that it would be better if they were Langkawi horses.
The famous Chief Minister then journeyed far across the globe, to far away lands in South America, to Argentina where he found the horses that he enjoyed riding so much there, that he decided to bring them back to Langkawi….
So in the 'Fiftieth year of Merdeka', some thirty fine mares, some already with young foals, arrived on the island.
Served by that fantastically handsome Arab stallion called ‘Al Barik’, the first of the new breed of horses was born, on Langkawi, towards the end of that year..
Looked after by the famous horseman, in the great stables at the foot of a legendary mountain, these horses adapted to the land, the beaches and the mountain jungle so well.
They were beautiful and well mannered, everybody loved them and they became the …
Famous Langkawi Horses……………who have been here ever since………….!!

AND NOW THE FIRST OF THEM HAS BEEN BORN.....!!!
